New Zealand is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses (the North Island and the South Island) and numerous smaller islands. From the sub-tropical far north, to the frequently cold far south, New Zealand is a land of dramatic landscape including snow-capped mountains, forests, rivers and lakes, and endless stretches of coastline dissected by magnificent harbors and beaches. The Maori people who first colonized this area developed a rich and distinctive culture, which still flourishes today.
