Experience Latin America this summer and make a difference in yourself and the local communities along your journey. This unique program allows students to explore two of the most historic and beautiful cities in Latin America: Cusco, Peru and Oaxaca, Mexico. Academics, field studies, service projects, cultural activities, excursions and language immersion blend together for perhaps the most rewarding and comprehensive summer possible.
The program starts in the heart of the Inca Empire in Peru. While in Cusco, one of the top international destinations, study with premier Andean professors and support local development projects in health care, social services or economic development. Coursework focuses on relevant topics such as History, Art, Architecture and Development of Peru. Guided tours will deepen the students' understanding of the topics discussed in class, in addition to developing abilities and aptitudes in relation to their understanding of artistic, cultural and historic processes in Peru. Courses include visits to various churches, museums, and sites of archaeological importance.
Next, travel to Oaxaca, Mexico. Explore Pre-Hispanic cultures, Spanish colonial history and modern Mexico in this UNESCO World Heritage site. The unique setting provides a historical and cultural backdrop for topics relevant to Mexico and Oaxaca. Studies are frequently held out in the city and surrounding communities, where students have the opportunity to interact with locals, learn about rural cultures and visit Pre-Hispanic archaeological sites. Volunteerism also allows excellent community interaction and is a great opportunity to see interesting sites and engage with people of different backgrounds.
Accommodations are provided with local Peruvian and Mexican families. Typically students will stay in a private room with a shared bathroom. Most meals will be provided.
