Spend two weeks in the historic and culturally rich coastal city of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. This program enhances students' global perspectives through a blend of hands-on development projects and cultural engagement activities aimed at providing an uplifting experience for both participants and community members. Salvador da Bahia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, retains its Portuguese colonial architecture, which reflects the "founders" of the city. However, the rhythm and heart of the city lies in the heritage of the descendants of African slaves who were brought to develop one of the most important cities in Latin America in the 19th century.
Home to stunning colonial architecture and some of the most beautiful beaches and best surfing in the world, Salvador is also the center of Afro-Brazilian culture and is a major art and music hub in the country. Participants will experience how to use the arts as vehicles for positive social transformation. From samba dancing to Afro-Brazilian drumming and Bahiana cooking to capoeira, volunteers experience how the music and art of Brazil have become tools to empower locals living in favelas (shanty towns) through innovative youth and community development projects.
To round out the experience, participants also have the opportunity to explore world class beaches, participate in African derived religious and cultural cermonies, visit local traditional woodworking or fishing communities, and tour sea turtle rescue organizations. Volunteers live with local homestay families. Cultural and adventure activities are planned to some of the most beautiful and historic sites and engaging communities. Come experience the vibrant atmosphere of Brazil, enhance your personal and academic horizons, and experience true immersion through community engagement.
During the two week program, students can expect cultural or outdoor adventures as well as project outings. Excursions may include:
