Summer Sustainable Environment

Program Information

Spend two weeks in the historic and culturally rich coastal city of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil.  This program enhances students' global perspectives through a blend of hands-on development projects and cultural engagement activities aimed at providing an uplifting experience for both participants and community members. Salvador da Bahia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, retains its Portuguese colonial architecture, which reflects the "founders" of the city.  However, the rhythm and heart of the city lies in the heritage of the descendants of African slaves who were brought to develop one of the most important cities in Latin America in the 19th century.

Brazil is home to lush rainforests, world class beaches and a variety of exotic wildlife.  However, with the depletion of the forests, desertification and beach pollution, all of Brazil's major ecosystems are threatened.  Spend two weeks with ProBrazil in Salvador da Bahia working with local NGOs and conservation organizations on environmental clean-up, protection, community education, and sustainable tourism projects.

To round out the experience, cultural and adventure activities are planned to some of the most beautiful and historic sites and engaging communities.  Home stay living and cultural activities from samba and Afro-Brazilian drumming to cooking and capoeira classes complement your project work.  Come experience the vibrant atmosphere of Brazil, enhance your personal and academic horizons, and experience true immersion through community engagement.
