Summer in Latin America: Belize and Mexico

Program Information

Experience Latin America this summer and make a difference in yourself and the local communities along your journey.  This unique program allows students to explore two incredible destinations: Oaxaca, Mexico - known for its location flanked by mountains, colonial architecture, and laid-back, bohemian atmosphere; and San Ignacio, Belize - recognized as a melting pot of cultures, home to incredible ruins, and a tropical Caribbean paradise.  Academics, field studies, service projects, cultural activities, and excursions combine for a truly unique and rewarding experience.

Start your summer in tropical San Ignacio, Belize, studying alongside other Belizean and international students. Summer students choose several course offerings, from anthropology to environmental science, while bringing fieldwork and excursions to ancient Mayan ruins, lush rainforests and rural communities in the culturally diverse, Caribbean nation of Belize bring what you learn in class to life. You'll surely appreciate the ecological and cultural diversity while you soak up all that the town of San Ignacio and surrounding areas have to offer.

Next, travel to Oaxaca, Mexico. Explore Pre-Hispanic cultures, Spanish colonial history and modern Mexico in this UNESCO World Heritage site.  The unique setting provides a historical and cultural backdrop for topics relevant to Mexico and Oaxaca.  Studies are frequently held out in the city and surrounding communities, where students have the opportunity to interact with locals, learn about rural cultures and visit Pre-Hispanic archaeological sites.  Volunteerism also allows excellent community interaction and is a great opportunity to see interesting sites and engage with people of different backgrounds.
