Summer Marine Ecology in the Bahamas

Program Information

Are you currently studying Marine Biology or have an interest in ocean life? This fantastic four-week summer program examines the coral reef environment and its relation to fossil coral reef environments and global climate change. Students will earn 4 credits in Marine Science while participating in labs on campus at Jacksonville University before flying off to the tropical paradise on the secluded island of San Salvador in the Bahamas. What many believe to be the first island sighted by Christopher Columbus, the island offers beautiful ocean views and terrain and coastline waiting to be explored and is one of the outermost of a chain of some 700 islands sprinkled throughout
more than 5,000 square miles. Although it is similar to the other islands of this archipelago, it is unique for its history, ecology, inland lakes, and potential for future development. Students will be housed and work at the Gerace Research Centre. The Centre has a continuing agreement with the Bahamas government to undertake a wide range of environmental research projects in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Join Jacksonville University faculty this summer and receive handson experience in Marine Biology while watching the sunset on this tropical paradise.

Housing

Students will be housed in shared basic dormitory accommodations. Full board on the island will be provided.
