Improve your Spanish, gain rewarding and practical experience, and live in one of the most beautiful natural envionments in the world through this volunteer program. The program is located in the community of Atenas, a picturesque town situated in the central highlands of Costa Rica, roughly 45 minutes from San Jose. This small town is made up of many surrounding communities that base their livelihood on agricultural pursuits such as growing coffee, oranges, mangoes, and sugarcane.
Costa Rican history, tradition and culture are deeply rooted here. Atenas is a small, charming town with a laid-back atmosphere. The friendly demeanor of the locals and the surrounding beauty of the area make this an ideal location for volunteering and Spanish study. Volunteers can enjoy an engaging service project and culturally-immersive program that ensure a valuable international experience. Mingle with the local Ticos, browse the local fruit and vegetable markets, and visit nearby volcanoes, waterfalls and beaches that make Costa Rica one of the most environmentally diverse countries in the world.
Volunteers are placed with local community organizations in the following fields: Education, Environmental Conservation, Social Service, Health, and more. In addition to volunteering, students can learn more about local Tico culture through living with a homestay family and taking cooking and dance classes while in Atenas. There are also many opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the region or attend a futbol match in nearby San Jose on the weekends!
Volunteers will be housed with local families in Atenas. Homestay families will be responsible for providing most meals. Each home is equipped with running water, electricity and indoor plumbing. Most families live within walking distance or a short bus ride of the city center.
