Study this summer in the world renowned city of Oaxaca and see why Oaxaca is one of the most beautiful cultural hubs of Southern Mexico. The summer semester combines international academics, field studies, immersive Spanish, homestay living, hands-on community service development and cross-cultural interaction. Coursework in English will focus on Mexico's culture, geography, film and literature, using Mexican folklore as the tie-in theme. Spanish language courses are tailored to students' levels.
Courses are taught by local professors in a unique setting that provides a historical and cultural backdrop for topics relevant to Mexico and Oaxaca. Studies are frequently held out in the city and surrounding communities, where students have the opportunity to interact with locals, learn about rural cultures and visit Pre-Hispanic archaeological sites. Volunteerism also allows excellent community interaction and is a great opportunity to see interesting sites and engage with people of different backgrounds. Participants can expect rewarding development work and cultural activities on Fridays and some Saturdays.
In addition to studying and volunteering, spend some time exploring! Mexico is a country of rich traditions and contrasting landscapes; a land of snow-capped peaks, expansive deserts, cool cloud forests, and the beauty of two-coastlines, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Oaxaca is the capital of the state and well-known for its hip cafes, art galleries and live music scene. The city boasts a Bohemian feel while maintaining its colonial charm and links to its pre-Hispanic past.
The program is timed exactly during the exquisite celebrations of the Guelaguetza festivals (http://www.oaxaca-mio.com/fiestas/guelaguetza.htm) that happen in Oaxaca during July. As a result, many classes will be lectures held outside the classroom, describing and visiting the festivals, the regions, the dances, etc, making Oaxaca your classroom for the summer!
Students will be housed with local homestay families. Three meals per day will be provided along with private rooms and shared bathrooms.
Spanish Language (all levels) and Culture and Mexican Folklore (in Spanish).

"I would rate this as probably my best college experience so far. It taught independence, self-confidence, appreciation for other cultures, as well as appreciation for your own."
